The Gift of Prophethood and the Eloquent Tongue
Harun (Aaron) was the older brother of Musa. When Musa was tasked with the daunting mission of confronting Pharaoh, he felt apprehensive due to a speech impediment and the weight of the responsibility. He prayed to Allah, 'And appoint for me a minister from my family—Aaron, my brother. Increase through him my strength and let him share my task.'
Allah granted this request, making Harun a Prophet as well. Harun was known for his extraordinary eloquence, his calm temperament, and his deep wisdom. He served as Musa's spokesman and his most trusted advisor throughout their mission in Egypt, demonstrating that every great leader needs a supportive and capable companion.
Leadership in the Absence of Musa
When Musa went to Mount Sinai for forty days to receive the Torah, he left Harun in charge of the Israelites. During this time, a man named Samiri misled the people into worshipping a golden calf. Harun tirelessly tried to stop them, warning, 'O my people, you are only being tested by it. Indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order.'
However, the people threatened to kill Harun, and he was forced to wait for Musa's return. When Musa returned and saw the idolatry, he was initially angry with Harun, but Harun explained the situation with patience and wisdom, showing that he had done his best to preserve unity and prevent a total civil war. His calm response eventually calmed Musa's fire.
A Legacy of Partnership
Harun's life is a beautiful example of how one can be a 'secondary' leader yet still hold immense importance in the divine plan. He never competed with Musa; instead, he used his unique talents of speech and mediation to support the mission. He was beloved by the Israelites for his kindness and his ability to reconcile between people.
His death occurred shortly before Musa's in the wilderness. He is remembered as a pillar of strength and a model of how to be a supportive companion in the path of truth. His lineage continued the priesthood among the Israelites, carrying the legacy of service to the House of Allah.
From the Holy Quran
وَاجْعَل لِّي وَزِيرًا مِّنْ أَهْلِي هَارُونَ أَخِي اشْدُدْ بِهِ أَزْرِي وَأَشْرِكْهُ فِي أَمْرِي
"And appoint for me a minister from my family - Aaron, my brother. Increase through him my strength and let him share my task."
— Surah Taha (29-32)
