The Pioneer of Civilization
Prophet Idris (Enoch) was the third Prophet after Adam and Shith. He was born during an era where human society was expanding but also beginning to deviate from the pure monotheism of Adam. Idris was not only a spiritual guide but also a pioneer of human civilization. He is famously credited as the first person to use a pen for writing, enabling the preservation of knowledge for future generations.
In addition to writing, Idris was the first to teach the art of tailoring—sewing clothes from cloth rather than wearing animal skins. He was also a master of arithmetic and astronomy, using these sciences to help his people understand the cycles of time and the vastness of Allah's creation. His life demonstrated that scientific exploration and religious devotion are deeply intertwined.
The Preacher of Babylon and the Migration
Idris lived in Babylon, where he tirelessly called people back to the worship of Allah. He warned them against the corruption and lawlessness that were spreading among the descendants of Qabil. When his people became increasingly resistant to his message, Idris gathered his followers and migrated to Egypt, settling near the Nile River.
He used the fertility of the Nile to teach his people advanced methods of agriculture and town planning. He was known for his extreme eloquence and his ability to explain complex truths in simple ways. He established many laws of justice and governance, ensuring that the community lived in harmony and obedience to Allah.
The High Station and the Fourth Heaven
Idris was a man of extraordinary piety. It is said that every time he pulled a needle while sewing, he would say 'Subhanallah' (Glory be to Allah). His daily good deeds were reported to be equal to the deeds of all people on Earth combined at that time. Because of this unwavering devotion, Allah 'raised him to a lofty station.'
During the Night Journey (Isra and Mi'raj) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he met Idris in the fourth heaven. Scholars debate whether Idris was raised to heaven while alive or if the 'lofty station' refers to his high spiritual rank. Regardless, his legacy remains as a Prophet who elevated the human condition through both divine revelation and the gift of intellect.
From the Holy Quran
وَاذْكُرْ فِي الْكِتَابِ إِدْرِيسَ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ صِدِّيقًا نَّبِيًّا وَرَفَعْنَاهُ مَكَانًا عَلِيًّا
"And mention in the Book, Idris. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet. And We raised him to a lofty station."
— Surah Maryam (56-57)
