The Mountain-Carvers of Al-Hijr
Succeeding the people of 'Aad, the tribe of Thamud rose to prominence in the valley of Al-Hijr (modern-day Saudi Arabia). They were legendary architects who carved luxurious palaces and secure homes directly into the heart of the mountains—ruins that still stand today as a testament to their skill. Their land was a paradise of gardens, springs, and date palms.
However, their prosperity led to the same corruption as those before them. They became arrogant, oppressed the weak, and worshipped idols. Prophet Salih, a man respected even by the disbelievers for his wisdom and integrity, was chosen from among them. He told them, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. He has produced you from the earth and settled you in it, so ask forgiveness of Him and then repent to Him.'
The Miracle of the She-Camel and the Divided Water
The leaders of Thamud challenged Salih to prove his Prophethood. They pointed to a massive, solid rock and demanded that he bring out from it a unique she-camel that was already pregnant. Salih prayed to Allah, and to their utter shock, the rock split open and a magnificent she-camel emerged. This was the 'She-Camel of Allah,' a living sign for the people.
Salih established a divine rule: the camel would drink from the community's well for one full day, and the people would have it the next. On the days the camel drank, she produced enough milk to feed the entire city. Salih warned them sternly: 'Do not touch her with harm, or a painful punishment will seize you.' For a time, her presence was a constant reminder of the Divine, which the arrogant elite found increasingly unbearable.
The Plot of the Nine and the Cruel Act
The presence of the miracle was winning the hearts of the humble, which threatened the power of the ruling class. Nine wicked men from the city plotted to destroy the sign. In a state of extreme defiance and intoxicated by their own pride, they hamstrung and slaughtered the she-camel. They then mocked Salih, saying, 'Bring us what you threaten us with, if you are truly a messenger!'
Salih, filled with immense sorrow for his people, told them they had only three days left to live. During those three days, the disbelievers even plotted to assassinate Salih and his family, but Allah protected them. The people's faces turned yellow on the first day, red on the second, and black on the third, as the realization of their fate began to sink in.
The Terrifying Blast and the Silence of Al-Hijr
At dawn on the fourth day, a terrifying blast from the sky (As-Sayhah) and a violent earthquake struck the valley. The sound was so powerful that it caused the hearts of the disbelievers to stop instantly. They were found dead in their magnificent mountain homes, which they thought were invincible. The entire civilization was silenced in a single moment.
Salih and the believers had already left the city. As he looked back at the ruins of his people, he said, 'O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the message of my Lord and advised you, but you do not like advisors.' The story of Salih remains a warning that harming what Allah has made sacred brings swift and total consequences.
From the Holy Quran
"And to the Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him... This is the she-camel of Allah as a sign for you...'"
— Surah Al-A'raf (73)
