The Frustrated Prophet and the Departure

Yunus (Jonah) was sent to the great city of Nineveh, which had over 100,000 inhabitants. For a long time, he preached the worship of Allah, but the people were stubborn, mocked his message, and continued their idolatry. Overwhelmed by frustration and feeling that his people would never change, Yunus decided to leave the city without receiving Allah's explicit permission.

He boarded a ship, thinking he could escape the responsibility of his mission. However, a violent storm soon threatened to capsize the vessel. The sailors, believing someone on board had brought bad luck, drew lots three times, and each time Yunus's name came up. Recognizing this as a sign from his Lord, he allowed himself to be thrown into the churning sea to save the other passengers.

The Three Darknesses and the Tasbih

As Yunus fell into the sea, a massive fish (often referred to as a whale) swallowed him whole by Allah's command, but was told not to harm his bones or flesh. Inside the fish, Yunus found himself in the 'three darknesses': the darkness of the night, the darkness of the sea, and the darkness of the belly. In that state of total isolation, he realized his mistake in leaving his post.

He turned to Allah with one of the most powerful prayers in history: 'La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimeen' (There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers). This prayer, known as the Tasbih of Yunus, moved the heavens. Allah heard his cry and commanded the fish to cast him out onto a barren shore, weak and ill.

The Miracle of Nineveh's Repentance

Weakened by his ordeal, Yunus was cared for by a gourd plant (Yaqtin) that Allah caused to grow over him, providing shade and nourishment. Once he recovered, he returned to Nineveh with a renewed spirit. To his utter shock, he found that in his absence, the people had seen the signs of the coming punishment and had collectively repented, turning to Allah in sincere worship.

The entire city—over 100,000 people—had embraced the faith. This was a unique event in Prophetic history, as Nineveh is the only community mentioned in the Quran to have averted their destruction through mass repentance. Yunus's story is a beautiful reminder of the power of forgiveness and the fact that it is never too late for an individual or a nation to return to the path of light.

From the Holy Quran

"And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' So We responded to him and saved him..."

— Surah Al-Anbiya (87-88)
