The Man of Abundance and Gratitude
Prophet Ayyub was a man blessed with every worldly favor. He was incredibly wealthy, with vast lands, thousands of livestock, and a large, loving family of fourteen children. Above all, he was renowned for his extreme piety; he used his wealth to feed the poor, clothe the naked, and support the orphans. He never let his riches distract him from the remembrance of Allah, proving that wealth can be a tool for righteousness.
His life served as a test of the highest order. Satan, envious of Ayyub's devotion, argued that Ayyub only worshipped Allah because of his many blessings. Allah, knowing the purity of Ayyub's heart, allowed a series of trials to unfold to show the world the nature of true faith—a faith that remains unshaken even when the 'gifts' are taken away.
The Loss of Everything and the Trial of Health
In a short period, disaster struck Ayyub's life. His livestock died, his crops were destroyed, and his wealth vanished. Then, his children were killed when the roof of their house collapsed. Finally, Ayyub himself was struck with a devastating skin disease that caused him intense physical pain and made his presence repulsive to others. He was forced out of his town and lived in a remote area with only his wife, Rahma, by his side.
Despite years of such extreme suffering that even his friends abandoned him, Ayyub's tongue never ceased to praise Allah. He never complained or questioned the divine decree. His wife worked as a servant to provide for them, even selling her own hair to buy bread when they had nothing left. Ayyub's patience became legendary, defining the phrase 'Sabr al-Ayyub' (The patience of Ayyub).
The Healing Spring and the Double Reward
After eighteen years of affliction, Ayyub made a humble and beautiful supplication: 'Indeed, distress has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.' He did not ask for wealth or health directly, but simply acknowledged his state to his Lord. Allah instantly answered his prayer, commanding him: 'Strike [the ground] with your foot; this is a [spring for] a cool bath and a drink.'
As Ayyub bathed in and drank from the water, his disease vanished, and his youth and strength returned. Allah then restored his wealth and granted him double the number of children he had before. His story is the ultimate reminder that no matter how long the night of suffering lasts, the dawn of Allah's relief is certain for those who remain patient and grateful.
From the Holy Quran
وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ
"And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, 'Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful.' So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity..."
— Surah Al-Anbiya (83-84)
