The Orator of Madyan and the Corrupt Market

Prophet Shu'ayb was sent to the people of Madyan, a civilization of wealthy traders and merchants settled in the northern Arabian Peninsula. They were blessed with a strategic location for trade, but they were infamous for their systemic dishonesty. They would use short weights and measures, cheating customers in every transaction, and they also practiced highway robbery, terrorizing travelers.

Shu'ayb, known for his extraordinary eloquence and persuasive speaking, urged them to establish justice. He told them: 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. And do not decrease from the measure and the scale.' He warned them that their ill-gotten wealth would bring them no real benefit and that economic corruption is a precursor to social collapse.

The Arrogant Rejection and the Threat of Expulsion

The wealthy elite of Madyan mocked Shu'ayb's call. They asked sarcastically, 'O Shu'ayb, does your prayer command you that we should leave what our fathers worship or that we should stop doing with our property what we will?' They believed that their religion should have no say in how they conducted their business. They threatened to stone him or drive him and his followers out of the city.

Shu'ayb remained remarkably calm, replying that he only desired reform as much as he was able. He reminded them of the fate of the people of Nuh, Hud, and Salih, and specifically the people of Lut, who were not far from them in time or location. He urged them to repent before the door of mercy closed, but their hearts were hardened by their greed.

The Day of the Shadow and the Earth's Tremor

The divine punishment for Madyan came in stages. First, a scorching heat wave gripped the city for seven days, so intense that no shade or water could provide relief. Then, a massive dark cloud appeared on the horizon, which the people thought was a bringing rain. They all gathered under its shadow for relief. This was the 'Day of the Shadow' (Yawm al-Zullah).

Suddenly, a terrifying blast from the sky (As-Sayhah) and a violent earthquake struck. The earth trembled beneath them as fire rained down from the cloud. In a single moment, the entire city of corrupt merchants was silenced. Shu'ayb and the believers were saved and moved to another land. The ruins of Madyan became a silent warning that no amount of wealth can protect a nation that ignores justice and honesty.

From the Holy Quran

"And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu'ayb. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah... and do not decrease from the measure and the scale... O my people, give full measure and weight in justice...'"

— Surah Hud (84-85)
